Scanned bank statement converter.
A scanned statement is a picture of numbers. To turn it into data the page must first be straightened, then read by optical character recognition, and then interpreted as a table. Each of those steps can introduce a wrong digit, which is why this converter treats OCR output with suspicion: every word carries a confidence, every row built from doubtful words is flagged, and the whole statement is reconciled against its printed balances.

What the review shows.
Every row carries an OCR confidence and, where a word was doubtful, a flag naming the reason. The running-balance chain checks each amount independently, so a low-confidence read that adds up is corroborated and one that does not is caught.
Review output for a noisy scan (fictional statement); the flagged row was corrected from the page image
| Date | Description | Debit | Credit | Balance | Confidence | Flags |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-08-02 | Payroll deposit ACME Design LLC | 2,500.00 | 10,920.00 | 98% | ||
| 2026-08-03 | Card purchase Fresh Market #214 | 84.17 | 10,835.83 | 71% | LOW_OCR_CONFIDENCE | |
| 2026-08-05 | Check 1042 | 1,200.00 | 9,635.83 | 97% | ||
| 2026-08-09 | Transfer to savings ****4471 | 500.00 | 9,135.83 | 96% |
The running-balance test independently confirms each amount: 10,920.00 − 84.17 = 10,835.83, so even a low-confidence OCR read is corroborated by the arithmetic.
Why convert bank statements to Excel here.
- 01
Straightened before it is read
Pages are rasterised, then deskewed and rotated with OpenCV before recognition. Upside-down and sideways pages are retried at the other orientations.
- 02
Confidence on every row
Recognition produces word-level confidences. Rows built from doubtful words are flagged LOW_OCR_CONFIDENCE, highlighted in review and listed in the Flags column of the export.
- 03
Arithmetic as a second opinion
Digits OCR commonly confuses (0/O, 1/l, 5/S, 8/B) are validated by the running-balance chain: if a balance does not follow from the previous one, the row is flagged even when OCR was confident.
- 04
Fix it against the scan
Click a flagged row to see the scanned line next to the extracted value, correct it, and the exports are regenerated. Edited rows are marked as user-modified.
- 05
No third-party OCR
Recognition runs on our own infrastructure with Tesseract. No outside OCR service receives your document, and originals are deleted after 24 hours.
- 06
Clear failures, not guesses
Very faint, heavily skewed or low-resolution scans fail with OCR_FAILED or NO_TRANSACTION_TABLE rather than a half-filled spreadsheet. Rescanning at 300 dpi usually resolves it.
How to convert a bank statement to Excel
Upload the scan
Drop a scanned PDF or a phone photo saved as PDF into the converter above. Rotated and slightly skewed pages are fine; the upload check tells you it is image-based.
Choose a format
Excel keeps the Confidence and Flags columns for easy filtering; CSV, JSON, OFX and QBO are also available once you have reviewed the flagged rows. OCR itself runs on every plan, including Free. This format starts on Starter; the free plan converts to CSV and Excel.
Review flagged rows
Each flagged row shows the scanned line next to the extracted value. Correct it if needed; the running-balance check confirms the rest of the chain.
Download the file
Download the export and the Conversion Report, which records the OCR component of the confidence score alongside the balance tests.

Scanned bank statement converter: questions
It depends on the scan. Clean 300 dpi scans of printed statements read well; faint, skewed or low-resolution images read worse. Rather than quote a percentage, the converter shows a confidence per row and reconciles the balances, so you always know which rows were doubtful and whether the arithmetic checks out.
300 dpi, greyscale or black and white, flat on the scanner glass, the whole page in frame. For phone photos: good light, camera parallel to the page, no shadows across the table.
Yes. Orientation and skew are corrected automatically, and other orientations are retried if the first attempt finds no table.
No. Recognition runs on our own infrastructure with Tesseract. See security for how files are stored and deleted.
